Built for the Challenge: How Royal Switchgear’s Field Experts Power a Responsive Grid
January 14, 2026
As the modern electrical grid undergoes a radical transformation, the demand for reliability has never been higher. For Royal Switchgear, meeting this challenge isn’t just about the equipment; it’s about the people on the front lines who ensure that the grid remains resilient. Through the work of Field Service Technicians like Derrick McGuffie and Tyler McKoy, Royal is redefining what it means to be a responsive partner in an evolving industry.
Speed as a Standard
In an industry where downtime can have massive cascading effects, responsiveness is a critical differentiator. Derrick McGuffie, who brings over 13 years of experience to his role, notes that Royal’s speed often surprises customers. While many manufacturers may take weeks to schedule a site visit, Royal often has a technician on-site within 24 hours of a critical Monday morning call.
“My role heavily delivers on responsiveness,” Derrick says. “Since I have been here, we have yet to turn down a job, no matter when they need it completed.” This commitment to the customer goes beyond just showing up; Derrick frequently stays late or arrives early to hit deadlines and even provides customers with his direct line for future troubleshooting.
Expertise That Educates
Responsiveness also means having the technical depth to solve problems that others cannot. Tyler McKoy, a 12-year veteran of Royal, focuses on empowering customers through education. Whether he is correcting a 345 kV vertical break switch that was installed incorrectly by contractors or demonstrating how a massive 5000 amp double end break can be locked over by a single person, his goal is to leave the customer more knowledgeable than when he arrived.
“I try and walk [contractors] through our entire process to make sure they have a good understanding of how and why we do the things we do,” Tyler explains. This approach builds a foundation of trust and rapport, ensuring that even when a situation is frustrated by delays, the customer’s mind is put at ease.

Conquering the Elements
The “evolving grid” often requires working in environments that are anything but ideal. Both technicians have adapted to extreme conditions to keep the power flowing, from 114-degree heat in Texas to negative 10-degree cold in the peaks of Colorado. They navigate remote, inaccessible terrain in Oklahoma and maintain mission-critical switches at NASA in Houston.
This level of dedication starts at the top. “At Royal Switchgear, our commitment to the grid isn’t contingent on a favorable forecast,” says Royal’s President Steven Donahue. “We know that when the elements are at their worst, our customers need us at our best. Whether it’s a blizzard in the Rockies or triple-digit heat in the Texas sun, our team is dedicated to being on-site and staying until the job is done right.”
The Future of Field Service
As the grid integrates more smart technology, renewable energy, and automation, the role of the technician is shifting. Tyler sees the position evolving from traditional repair work into tech-enabled, data-driven system management. Derrick anticipates a future where video-style training and more user-friendly designs will allow customers to make adjustments even faster.
Despite these technological shifts, the core of Royal’s success remains a human one. It is found in the technician who stays until the job is done and the customer who asks for a field expert by name because they know they can depend on them.
The Royal Standard
Whether it is servicing a 345 kV switch that requires precise timing or overnighting critical parts to resolve a hidden insulator issue, Royal Switchgear remains committed to grid reliability and the satisfaction of the people who manage it. We don’t just provide equipment; we provide the boots-on-the-ground expertise to ensure that the equipment performs under pressure.
